CLS 55 AMG
Hey guys! need help with my CLS55 (tyres + tranny!)

Hey guys! im new here so please be pacient with me, i hope im not too much of a pain but i gotta ask some questions as my dealer is being very unhelpful!

First of i drive a 2006 CLS55 AMG , which has covered around 17000km.

It came with the standard AMG OEM 19" alloys (which are standard in these parts of europe), with mixed tyres 255/35/zr19 fronts and 285/30/zr19 backs. Since traction is a problem i want to try bigger tyres on my existing rims.

I want to put 295/30/zr19 on my OEM AMG alloys but my dealer and tyre fittment place tell me that they would rub and i would damage the airmatic on my car. Yet i have read some posts with people claiming to run such a tyre config (on the original alloys as well) .... could you guys chime in this thread and tell me with your expriences with 295/30/zr19 on the CLS55 amg. i also read some E55 owners had those tyres on, and was wondering is there any difference in fitment between the CLS55 and the E55?

secondly my transmission died recently. I couldnt shift it from P , and the dealer towed the car and is replacing the transmission. I asked them whether i should change my driving style to break-in the new transmission and they just gave me an empty stare ... so any idea what should i do to run it in and for how long after i get it back? i take it i shouldnt use kickdown so would it be best to use manual mode? should i vary revs and should i go on a long journey or something.

Many thanks for the help

I don't own a CLS (though I expect I will in relatively short order) so you can take this with a grain of salt, but...:

1. If the traction problem you refer to relates to acceleration, going to a 295 over a 285 is not going to solve your problem, and could potentially make it worse. Contact patch is a function of vehicle weight over tire pressure, not the nominal tire size.

Going to the wider tire will change the shape of the contact patch by increasing the lateral dimension with a corresponding decrease in the longitudinal dimension (now you can see where the potential exists that accelerative traction could be negatively affected). Nonetheless, the area will remain the same. You will only increase area by reducing tire pressure (or increasing vehicle weight), and in a 30 series tire you have no room to do that as you will quickly begin to see mechanical distortion of the contact patch due to tire structure constraints.

The long and short of it is that, on street tires, 2wd cars making ~ 500hp are going to have traction problems under hard acceleration. Period. You could go to a stickier tire, but then you compromise longevity, among other things.

2. As to the trans, I would just take it easy for the first 500 miles or so. I wouldn't worry about driving it in full auto or not letting it kick-down, just don't hammer on it too hard and I would think it would be fine.

we have a guy here with 305 rears on his OEM 19 cls 55
I have the same problems as you with traction...it was non existant at low speeds if i hammer it.

i tried michlien PS2 and omg the difference they made. i also moved up to 295 rears and so far they are fine on my 18 OEM's alhamdilah

295 is not a problem for the CLS. During our last couple of track visits, there was a guy who was tracking his CLS and he was running 295s in the rear on 18" AMGs. Also, Juicee is running 305 in the rear with no problems.

the 285 tyres that i can get are the bridgestone OEMs , the 295s are the PS2 and i really want to try them out
