Yes, you have to hold the button in Mercedes....BMW, Volvo, and others program their system to associate seat/mirror settings with a given key, but Mercedes does not, and yes, it is very annoying.

If you have keyless go, the settings are stored with the key. You have to set it use the key recognition using the dash menus. At least that's how my SL works.

Strange, I don't recall reading this; just a sec here, let me RTFM....oh, yeah, dang, never noticed this! It's on p. 165 of the owners' manual, but I'll copy and paste it here. They actually don't mention anything about this being a keyless-go-only feature (I've got it, so I can't test it to see if it works on a non-keyless-go-equipped car), so even without the keyless go, I'd give it a shot.

Setting SmartKey-dependency
Use this function to set whether the memory settings for the seats, the steering wheel, the mirrors and other settings of the control system should be stored separately for each SmartKey ( page 92).
  • Move the selection marker with the + or - button to the Convenience submenu.
  • Press button (up or down arrow) repeatedly until you see this message in the display: Key-dependent. The selection marker is on the current
    setting.
  • Press button + or - to set SmartKey-dependency to on or off.

Now I've got to go RTFM for the ML and see if it's got this too; actually there is where it'll pay off, as I drive that a lot more than the wifey drives my CLS!!
