Gas small from time to time?

Hey guys, I've been getting a noticeable raw fuel (gas) smell from time to time coming from what I want to say the front end (outside) of the car. There's really no way for me to say when it exactly happens, or if its only on hot or cold days, or when the tanks full or empty, as it happens so sporadically.

I searched and read up on the more common fuel pump / hose problems under the rear seats, but I checked them out this evening and they're clean and dry. They don't appear to be "leaking" neither does the tank when I looked underneath the car.

Any other common "problem areas" I should take a look at? Anyone else have a similar situation that can chime?

As always, everyone's help, advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Not familiar with your engine, so I'm taking a stab in the dark...

Leaking injector O-Ring, maybe? Though, if that was the case, you'd likely have known that was the problem as soon as the leaking gasoline caught fire. Still, wouldn't hurt to look them over.

The problem with a leaking o-ring from an injector is that once they start leaking, you'll pretty much smell (and most likely see) gas 24/7 (or at least when the engine is running / fuel pump primed).

Considering that the gas smell I have, comes and goes, leads me to believe it may be more of a loose connection, defective emission related device, or something in those lines, but then I could be wrong.

I haven't yet dove into the engine bay looking for anything specific. I figured I would see if anyone had a similar problem, this way I can check out the more common areas first.

Nevertheless, I will inspect the fuel injectors (to the best of my ability), later on this weekend...

had the exact same problem/smell - took it in under warranty and they replaced some type of sensor - never had a smell again, and i think there is a TSB on it.

I had a gas smell twice in my car, it turned out to be an issue with the gas tank and hose back there, it leaked gas into the foam behind the rear seats... it all had to be replace foam/hose then the second time the whole tank...

I would love to know what sensor they ended up replacing!!! If there's any way you can look that up from the work order / invoice, that would be great!

Yea, as mentioned, that's the first thing and area I checked. Hose is fine, pump housing and foam are clean and dry, and there doesn't appear to be any gas leaking in or around the tank...

I know in some case it's hard to pin point exactly where a smell like this can originates, but in my case, I'm pretty sure it's up toward the front end of the car. 90% sure its under the hood, which is why I'm concerned.

A few years back, I experienced a cracked EVAP canister on my truck, which emitted the same gas smell. I hoping its something simple like that..

any signs of a leak ie a stain on the floor/driveway? I'd imagine if you checked the foam and all that junk it must be something you've looked for already but had to ask...

It might be the purge valve. This bleeds off excess gas vapor usually during warm up. It also emits a clicking sound when opening as it is a solenoid valve. On the E-Class V6 it is located next to the ESP manifold on top of the left front wheel well. It's black plastic and a couple of inches square and has the letters "MOT" printed on it.

A more common source of gas fume smell is a failing O2 sensor which causes the engine to run rich at warm up. Of course, the smell is at the tailpipe unless a breeze pushes it under the car.

I thought "small gas" referred to the high consumption of the car with a heavy gas pedal...

Maybe an overfilled gas tank that overflows as the temperatures are getting higher?
