Snow tires??

Well, we're about 2-3 months from the beginning of the snowy season in the upper mid-west and I've started to look for a winter wheel/tire package for my CLS63. I've put snow tires on vehicles in the past, but for some reason I've run into several potential problems so far with the CLS63. Different customer service reps at TireRack have given me different answers to the below questions. Can anyone comment?

--Can I run 255/40/19 snow tires on all 4 corners or do I have to stay with the staggered stock recommended tire sizes? I'd really like to avoid putting a 285 or 295 tire on the rear since it won't be ideal in the snow. Pirelli's are the only snow tires that come in the stock sizes from what I've found.

--Do I have to use TPM sensors? I religiously check my tire pressures 1-2 times/wk, especially during the winter. Does anyone know if there's an illuminated light on the dash or is it just an error message that can be dismissed while driving? They're $244 for the set.

With basic 19" wheels from TireRack along with Pirelli snow tires (in the stock staggered sizes) and TPMS it comes to about $2200 shipped.

Thanks for your help.

If you are getting a dedicated set of rims for the winter setup, get 4 replica front rims and run 255's on all 4 corners. You could get spacers for the rear to stick them out a bit so they won't look so tucked in. It would probably be a good idea to get the TPMS so you have no warning lights. By doing this you will have a broader choice of tires, reduce the width in the rear and lower your overall cost.

Great reply, griza. Very informative. I'll begin my search for 4 front 19" wheels and opt for 255's or even 245's all the way around.

thanks again.

You can use stock wheels and run these in 225 front and 265 or 275 rear. The 225/265 tires are $525 a set on clearance. 225/275 are $610 a set
