OEM Caliper Colors

New to the CLS vehicle.

I've seen many different colors of calipers on this forum, which appear to be OEM (i.e. not taking about folks who have painted theirs). Some of the colors that I've seen in pics included:

Black
Silver
Red
Yellow

What decides the color of the caliper? Is it an option/choice from the dealer? Does it come with a special configuration (i.e. performance package)?

For the C219 i'm pretty sure they all came with the standard silver. Any other colors are painted.

They all come silver

HOWEVER

If you track your car and really use your brakes, your front calipers WILL turn gold. No way to avoid it.

So if you are looking at a used AMG, and you see gold calipers, you can assume that the car has been tracked and the brakes have used hard. You might also find micro cracking on the rotors eminating from the holes. Doesnt mean that its been abused, just means its been used hard.

The gold color has NOTHING to do with brake dust. When you overheat the calipers, they change color, and gradually turn deep gold. If you ever track your 4,000lb+ vehicle you will get the same effect, but you will get the red tirangle on dashboard warning you of overheating brakes long before they get to this stage
