Help! Wheels Experts Please Chime in!

Here is the summary of the story:
I bought a set of 20" wheels from a forum member that were on his SL a while back, and sold them to another forum member for his CLS recently. I sold the car before I had a chance to put them on my CLS. The buyer received the wheels, and they wouldn't fit. They wouldn't even bolt on! Now, we are trying to figure out what the problem is. He has a 550, and I had a 63, but I don't think that's where the problem is. Is it the offset? But, Don't SL and CLS wheels have similar offset? Anything we can do to make them fit? Has anyone encountered this kind of problem when putting SL wheels on their CLS? Wheels experts please advise.

Thank you very much!

centering ring stuck on the hub of the car, centering ring stuck inside the centerbore or the wheel, the cls has a "nipple" that sometimes has to be removed depending on the wheel

Whitepano, will removing that part cause any safety issue or harm the vehicle in the long run? The buyer's tech was suggesting him to dremel the wheels down to make them fit. Is it safe? Anything we should worry about?
Thanks for the input
