Post question on official winter tire thread elsewhere on mbworld for tire rack recommendations.
I use Hankook Icebears on my AMG for winter driving. I have a Gwagen and an Audi 5000 with Blizzaks if it is solid snow, ice and slush. Otherwise stay home.

No, I'm actually running them on one of my other sets of wheels, but if you go to Conti's website, there's a PDF with all the available fitments (including approved wheel width information). There are a pretty solid number of offerings for 19". The tires are under the "Performance" tab, not the "Winter" tab.

I haven't had the Pirellis on this car, but compared to the blizzaks, they're leaps and bounds ahead. I'd rate snow / ice traction pretty much the same, but in dry & cold conditions, the DWSs are much more like a performance tire (I'd assume the Pirellis are pretty much the same in that respect). I would also assume that the Contis would cost less, but that's pure speculation. And as far as ability in the snow, I had DWSs on my C63 a couple years ago in the snowstorms that shut down Washington, DC, and while I used the GL (as it is unstoppable), I would not have worried about driving on the hardpack / ice.
