Bad intake manifold??

Hello all,

Hoping to get some expert advice here. My check engine light came on this morning on my 07 cls 63. Took it right to the dealer and just received a call that I may need to replace the intake manifold...for a cost of 3,400 bucks! They said it could be the gaskets but they felt that was unlikely but they wouldn't know for sure until they took it apart. They mentioned there could possibly be a crack or the flaps not working.

Has anyone had any experience with this before? Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Intake gaskets and the oil breather on the pass rear of the engine are very common vacuum leaks. I have never seen a intake manifold go bad on a 63. Has your dealer never seen a 63 before BTW any good tech can do intake gaskets in less than 30 min so if they try charging you more than 2.5 including diag, shop around

Thanks for the reply! They said if its just the gaskets that it would be about 3 hours labor around 500.00 bucks. They did say they don't get too many 63's.

Is this something that can be a DIY repair?

Depends on your ability. Its not hard however torque is very critical of the intake bolts. The bolts are a alloy and crack easily. Aside from some typical torx sockets and a low torque torque wrench, no special tools are needed. The intake bolts will need to be replaced at the same time as the gaskets too. You can cheat and just lift the manifold just enough to slide out the old gaskets and slide in the new ones. Just make sure to clean around the manifold first with a blow gun or something. You don't want any dirt getting into the engine.

Torque is,
10 nm then
90 degrees then
10 degrees
Start at right front then left rear then right 2nd then left bolt 4 then right bolt 3 then left bolt 3 then and so on

Bad Intake Manifold???

Same thing happened on my 07 CLS63 AMG. Luckily I have an extended warranty and the warranty folks told the dealer to replace the gaskets. That solved the problem.

Same here..they ended up replacing gaskets.. However, if I didn't ask them questions and tell the info from my research on this board I think they would have tried to tell me it was the manifold. Hard to trust anyone these days.

First I am glad that the issue seemed to have been solved , but I am curious what MB dealer did you take the car to ? I recently made the mistake of assuming that MB dealers or the service departments are in fact capable ...
much to my surprise , most are far from it... I have NEVER EVER Heard of a defective INtake manifold ? That s a first . Do let us know what that dealer is so that more people would watch out .
