Owning out of warranty?

As the value of these cars(and other amg marks) continue to drop like a stone it has popped up on my radar screen as a potential pick up.

Ive been eyeing cls63 and c63 and curious what are common issues are with these cars?
Are they mechanically sound? Seems more like little electrical issues(sensors) seem to be the biggest problem.

Is owning a car without a warranty that much of a big deal? Keep in mind I am not a "typical" owner. Im pretty hands on with all my cars and always have been. I do my own work and short of rebuilding a transmission I can do just about anything. Though I could probably manage to get through a tranny rebuild if I had to(never needed to)

So my skills are pretty well developed. However I dont want to dive into one of these cars and then be spending every weekend fixing issues all the time.

What kind of high mileage can one expect from these engines?
Most Ive seen have lower miles with the odd ones up at 80-100k.

I figure the engines should be fine but I really dont know much about these cars(hence the thread)
Are any special tools/equipment needed for most basic things? (example I know in some newer bmws if you need to swap a battery it needs to be reprogrammed/reset at the dealer. Im not sure there is a shadetree mechanic work around for that)

Any tips, info, links etc is appreciated.

thanks
