Dvd?
Any thoughts on adapting the screen and software/harness so that one can play DVDs? I am talking about just plug and play without expensive Mickey Mouse modifications and after market screens. I know for sure that this is an option in Europe as some MB models there have DVD written on the same Navigation button which we see here in the US. Who would sell such hardware/software here? Also, I know that the DVD screen for the Euro Cayenne, for example is of higher resolution than the stock Porsche screen. On the same token, would the stock MB screen provide a good enough resolution for DVD playback or do I need a different high-res screen?

Your car uses the identical head unit found on the newer E-class cars. Look on E-bay for the Euro version of your head unit and swap them out. It's that simple..then you can play DVD's on your screen. I think you'll find the resolution pretty good. Beware, you'll loose the ability to add Satellite radio by switching to Euro. You can also easily add a TV tuner and antennae if you want to watch VHF tv. Check with MB Doctor (Brooklyn). He's hard to understand because he's not American. His name is Sam. I bought some stuff from him & was VERY PLEASED. Good Luck

Unfortunately, EBay shows nothing along this matter. How much do you think would cost to purchase one of the Euro-head units? Would it be region free, or would it accept Euro-DVDs only? Can you watch while in motion or do you have to stop in order to play a DVD? How would I locate your referral in New York?

By the way.. Yes the DVD play back is halted when the vehicle hits 5 mph but that can be defeated by going into a special hidden menu (Sam will show you how to do it). I believe the player plays all American DVD's.

If you mean connecting a laptop computer when you say "Star Dignos", actually even that isn't necessary to get the Euro unit to play DVD's. I know someone who had a 2004 E500 who bought the Euro head unit from Sam. This guy did the swap of the head unit himself and Sam told him how he could over ride the 5 mph thing just by navigating thru menus on the head unit. NO STAR DIGN COMPUTER WAS NEEDED! Imagine that.

Hidden Menus
If you do a search on this forum, there are many posts on the hidden menus which I think work in pre-2006 units, whereas newer units can only be unlocked with star programming. But specifically, I remember the Kevin M weekend project threads really helped me when I did my EURO comand swap and the Bluetooth phone install.
If I remember right, holding the 5 - 3 - 7 combination for a few seconds allows you to change the language & country settings as well as allow you to start up with the ///AMG logo instead of the default benz logo.
To get into the engineering menu, put the unit in CD or CD changer mode, then hold the SERV - MUTE - SEND keys together. Once you're done looking around, while still in the engineering mode press * # <-- to get into the secret menu to allow driver distractions (ie playing dvd while in motion), region codes, mp3, etc.
Hope those work, I last accessed this stuff a while ago, so definitely do a SEARCH to verify those key combinations above if they don't work as described. Also, you can still access your SAT radio by switching between US & Euro modes with the VIDEO button which replaces the SAT button.
Also keep in mind that if you do the swap, there are a lot of small issues that are incompatible in the states and vice versa, but you gain so much that little things like not being able to see AM stations or wheel buttons scrolling up/down in the appropriate directions for radio stations, or download the phone book in Bluetooth are outweighed by the address book, DVD, RDS, etc. that are available in EURO units
