When I turn off the engine I hear a noise from under the hood that sounds exactly like an electric arial retracting, can anyone tell me what it is?

Yeah, I've heard this before too. Sometimes a big, loud clank, like something broke...very strange.

open the hood and check where the blower is, when your turn off the car a cover closes over the blower, also your air vents all close.
