Harsh Engagement Possibly Followed by Droning/Buzzing Noises During Light Acceleration Between Engine Speed of 1200 - 2500 RPM
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of humming/buzzing noises or noticeable harsh engagement during gentle acceleration between engine speed of 1200 - 2500 rpm; this may be caused by incomplete adaptation of the torque converter, the transmission (EGS) ECU software or glycol contamination of the automatic transmission fluid. Follow the below repair procedures to resolve.
Note: The condition is not intermittent and can be reproduced at all times.
Note: The Glycol test must be performed only if:
a. the vehicle was produced before 09/2003,
b. the radiator is manufactured by "Valeo", refer to Figure 1 for identification.
I started having the jerking problem in my car and brought it in. They swapped out the ECU and sent me home. It didn't seem to help so I printed out this post and brought it with my car. They ended up replacing the Radiator and the entire transmission. I've had my car back for 2 days and I love it.
Has anyone had this problem with the new one? I had/have a version? of this issue.. the dealer said I had a leaking seal which they replaced and refilled the tranny. I don't know if I believe its gone.. seems better, but when driving slow in traffic it still seems a little jumpy.. normal driving I don't seem to have a problem.. maybe I'm paranoid and not used to driving an automatic.

My plan was to have the car checked out by a dealer or independant shop, but is there anyway for them to tell without running a bunch of tests? Is it normal to taek a VIN # to a local dealer and have them run a service report on the car, which would show if this has been addressed or not??
Give me a little peace of mind so I don't run off and just buy another BMW! Thanks!
After I had my transmission completely replaced due to the glycol issue it is a completely different car. I had the same issues with my car since purchase at 26K, every time I would get into traffic the tranny was jumpy and jerky. I have had the new tranny about 2k and it shifts much smoother and I have not seen the jerky behavior in traffic anymore.

I believe this is only a problem with the 02, and they have it narrowed to a production range and VIN#'s too. If you are looking at an 02 make sure it has either remaining factory warranty, or an extended warranty. The work done on mine to replace the transmission due to the faulty radiator would have cost me $7K if I didn't have the starmark warranty. Even then the dealer game me the runaround until I went to see the GM of the dealership, and called the regional service rep of MB corporate.
I love the car, but I am a little uneasy about it's reliability.
