We steal a drive in the first C55 AMG in the region and step out feeling closer to heaven.

The two pairs of chrome exhaust tips at the rear could have been a quick mod-job done on a fourcylinder C-Class.There are C 200 Kompressors on our roads that wear more aggressive-looking alloy wheels than the 18-inch jobs here.The subtle fins and folds running along the lower edges and the thin lip sitting on the bootlid look smart, but the overall visual makeover on the black car is so mild
that it?ll easily slip under aby radar.

But the lack of visual drama is an essential part of making the C 55 AMG the diablo that it is. Like the other AMG cars, the C 55 is the Devil?s Advocate on four wheels.This boyish Brad Pitt is out for your soul.That slick Armani suit and charming smile only serve to disarm
your defences, and bed your daughter.

The driver of the BMW 745Li on the road may or may not have a beautiful female offspring at home, but he was properly chaffed when his V8 limousine couldn?t pass the black C-Class.The deep baritone growl that the little Merc made as it pulled away into the distant horizon was evidence that he was licked by a bona fide AMG car.



Not that the C 55?s driver can claim any credit.

The 5.4-litre naturally-aspirated engine packs more heat than El Capone and his boys have in their bobby guns. Like the weapons that the gangsters of the ?20s used, the engine is hooked up to an automatic. Aim the car in the general direction, squeeze the throttle and watch other road users ahead start moving in reverse.Those looking for a bit more involvement can hit the ?M? button to activate
the full manual mode on the AMG Speedshift gearbox.

With the brutal throttle thrown wide open, gearchanges are effective.There is a slight jolt to contend with, but not more than is expected of any car with such sporting intentions at this level.
With 367bhp and 510Nm of torque, the C 55 has more grunt than even the BMW M3.The ease afforded by the slushbox, the good all-round visibility and the car?s compact size mean that the average wheelman should be able to annihilate any hotshot piloting low-slung Ferraris and the like.

In real world terms, the C 55 could be among the most effortless means to shatter the egos of macho men in flashy sports cars.

There?s more to the C 55?s appeal than juvenile thrills at drag races. With the tweaks made to the chassis and suspension settings, along with a slight quickening of the steering rack (by seven percent), the C 55 delivers a far more stirring dynamic performance than thought possible of any C-Class. It brakes well too, thanks to generously sized stoppers that seem to fill the AMG alloy wheels to
overflowing.

Despite wearing aggressive 18-inch Pirelli P-Zeros, the ride is remarkably plaint so the monster C-Class will willingly potter around with docility. All it takes to shred this impression of civility is a brief lapse of self-discipline.

The C 55 will twitch its tail momentarily before the ESP enforces its draconian hold to keep the rear wheels in check.You would never have thought that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde live so close to each other. Before you run off thinking that you have the upper hand over the mad scientist, switching the ESP off on public roads could be
your own undoing.

Taking cues from the car?s understated exterior styling, the C 55?s interior is similarly unassuming. Subtle embellishment elevates the otherwise humble C-Class cabin into something that?s a bit more special.The nappa leather with Alcantara upholstery is dressed by bold stitching finished in a contrasting shade.The steering
wheel rim is profiled to offer better grip when the car is out leaving unsuspecting cars in its dust.

The hand-crafted engine is three times the size of the 1.8-litre unit in the entry-level C-Class model. Packing a such a big engine in a compact saloon obviously goes against conventional wisdom. But the C 55 really isn?t a car for the conformist. Its understated styling speaks the language of sophistication well. But it being such a sleeper on the road also hints at darker inclinations than just being
a handsome face wearing a sharp suit.
