No insult intended, but your good friend is kind of slow. A 1:31 is a very respectable time for the big track, but I've been told that a 1:30 can be done in a daily driver with heat, air conditioning, full interior, leather, everything -- and with only 247 horsepower, and on 200-wear-rated BFGoodrich street tires, in a 32-year-old car that's 150 pounds heavier than it came stock.

Math was never a prerequsite for joining this forum

What tips do you have for an X5 owner on a tight track? :p

This could be fun, your 911 against SMGC32's 1992 325is. His times in the BMW are very similar to your times. Similar power figures as well. In order to get anywhere near 1:30, you must have an awfully well sorted out suspension. Meaning, that it really isn't a daily driver any longer. Unless you are a vastly superior driver than SMG and this, with all due respect, I doubt. He is a very accomplished driver/instructor.

It will be fun to go out and represent European manufacturers against the growing Evo/STi onslaught.

use it as a tow vehicle for a sorted out 3-series, j/k! I would say lower the center of gravity first.

Haha, I'm halfway on the path. Working on our how to try to get the rear seats out, but then that upsets the weight balance and gives me more underteer.

3er would never come into my garage. What I really want is a Z4!

Well, I'd say forget the old adage about 'using all the track' -- in an SUV, use the infield.

If the car's light enough, you don't need the huge spring rates. My 911 isn't as plush and pillowy as my other car, but it's the one I drove to Wahoo's today for lunch.

I wouldn't claim to be vastly superior to anyone who has the good sense to race an E30 M3. Those are nice cars.

i remember jon w or somebody raced the c32 on stock brakes and the rotors ended up cracking all the drilled holes (or at least developed miniature cracks radiating from each of the holes) and the calipers turning gold from all that heat. might wanna consider new set of bbk as it sounds like u get serious time for the car on the tracks..

haha, well taunting benz drivers is easy. i do it all the time. just go find one of these idiots with 500hp c-classes and ask them why their c-class is slower than an e55 at the drag strip! that ought to make some friends really fast!

correct, stock brakes are not suited to extended track use and they do discolor and the rotors will crack.

my buddy has a Z4 . Nicely sorted for a stocker! Good balance. Of course, it's a BMW! :v I would wait for the upcoming coupe version. I have also seen the Z4M on PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy in Malibu). Quad exhaust, etc.

I think sometimes we loose track of the issue, and thats "road racing a C32."
I know theres some very accomplished drivers on the board. Jack Olsen and have had some spirited encounters, and I think that what were looking for is FUN. Learning to drive your car with skill is a hugh rush for most. If your posting on this tread you ARE a track junkie and thats ok.
You are among friends.

I for one would like to see some MB on track days. I've had the good fortune to have driven all the AMG vehicles on the track at speed. Most drivers will never reach the limits of there AMG cars on the track. Forget all that BMW smack about the ulitmate driving machine.

Back to the C32. Why is Jack Olsen fast at WSIR? He understands that mechanical grip is only good till 90-100mph, then you need downforce. I haven't calculated the down force on his wing but I'm betting its around 400-500 lbs at 125 mph.

So my recipie for a C32 would be to run 800lb ft springs and 600 rear with bilstein dampers that have been run on a shock dyno. Hoosiers on 8.5 ft and 9.5 rears. I'd put a wing with about 5-6 deg. on downforce on the rear to make the car stick into trun 8 which is the whole key. If it will do 120+ thru
8 it will run 1:35 with no motor mods. (assumes club level driver)

BTW, if your interested in tracking your car come out and watch the Alfa Club event this weekend at WSIR. I'm driving a Blk Porsche 993 tt which I'm testing some new go slow parts.

It's all fun and I am glad a few of us will be there. I am flattered Schwarz, but I can't run a 1:30 in the BMW. Should be around 1:36 with 223 hp and 2850lbs and no front splitter or rear wing, just stock body, and Toyos, that is if something doesn't break again...
