2002 AMG C32 ticking noise while idling

I'm in Minnesota so I tend to warm my car up for 5-7 minutes before driving it, if it's been out of the garage over night or whatever. At first it's fine, but then after some time idling it will start to make the ticking noise in this video.

http://www.mediaonthestreet.com/bifp...ckingnoise.wmv

After driving it (15 mins to the office) the ticking noise is gone.

Thanks for any guidance here.

It is the purge valve. Please note that acording to the document cars produced after 07/2001 should have the enhanced braket. The total cost (parts plus labor) is $21.60 at Star Motor Cars here in Houston. Money very well spent! The cabin is so quiet now, it is amazing what a little clamp can do!

Yes,if the sound is coming from your purge valve then all you need to do is get that metal clip to stop that annoying sound.

I am probably going to sound stupid, but where is the purge valve?

Here is a picture of where it will be under the hood, it is circled in red. Even though this is a picture of a C320 the purge valve is located exactly where a c32 amg's would be.

Ditto on the purge valve problem as the most probably cause. As a side comment - 5 to 7 minutes is WAY too long to long to let your car warm up. In really (10F or colder) cold temps, maybe a minute max - then careful driving is best. Your engine will warm up much faster if driven delicately. Idling to warm up your engine (no load) is marginal at best, plus the the trans and diff are not warmed to operating temperature in the process.

I've attended cold weather testing sessions by MB and while the techs were adamant that no idling warm up is necessary (start and go (gently) immediately), Germans tend to be VERY specific, I did finally get some agreement that starting the vehicle, fastening your belt, adjust radio, etc. while waiting for the vehicle to come down from it's high idle is probably best and gives a safety margin for the oil to fully circulate.

I didn't know that could be so bad for the car - good info; in any case I would say what you describe is what I usually do before my daily commute, but I'm in a heated garage so it's like 55 F - so after high-idle, I just go. There are times though, about once a month or so when I'm working on another car in the garage and mine sits out all night. If it's cold that night, I will let it idle for 5 minutes or so in the morning before I go. Not because I'm letting the engine warm up - I'm trying to let the interior warm up and sometimes defrost the windows. It gets cold up here bro. Guess I'll start moving it into the garage a half hour before I go

I think it probably could be on the 55, but I would think this fix is in for these cars already?

That said, I took mine to my dealer and they said "that's normal...that means your purge valve is working". I'll be buying this piece and fix it myself.

Same issue here. I hate hearing noises like that especially on a $60k car.

i have the same problem, my service advisor said its nothing bad, just a bad braket MB put in. you can fix it yourself, by following the lines when its ticking, and once it stops, tie it up with something.

No C32, but while on the topic, can anyone tell me if its the same problem with my 430? The video moves to the passenger side of the motor, and you can hear it.
