ECU Reset Trick - Highly recommand! ;-)

I don't think the ECU reset requires a waiting period after you switch on the ignition (not start) and hold the gas pedal down for 5 seconds. I think you're good to go after you let the pedal up (no 1 or 2 minute wait).

On Saturday I had to drop a kid off, then pick him up, at a particular location. Between those trips I did an ECU reset (just the gas pedal part), and running the same route twice, it was incredible what a difference it made. On two occasions, I induced rolling rear tire spins by hitting the gas (not trying to induce wheelspin, just an aggressive pedal).

I guess it's just a software change, and the only difference is the rate at which pedal pushing is transmitted to the throttle. But DAMN the car felt faster.

Highly recommand! (Sorry, I had to adopt that phrase.)

I think he's aware of that thread, hence his advise that there's no need to wait for 1-2 minute. This time he was just pointing out that he's so happy it worked.

Mine worked without waiting tonight before I left the office. I've heard others wonder if continuously resetting in this way (although it seems more like 'forced learning' or something) would do any damage or create some wierd programming down the road.

Audi has the same adaptation process, and there is no waiting period. That's what led me to try it.

I've read through both posts, and the open question is still... do you depress the gas pedal past the kickdown switch, or stop at the kickdown switch?

Thanks.

yeah it works, no need for the 2 min wait. i drove to my gf's house same route there and back. reseted the ecu when i got there, on the way back the throttle response was quicker, i think the wait is just optional lol

as for the kickdown or not, i press it to the kickdown, and i wait abt 10 seconds instead of 5

I just wait until the ignition beeping stops before removing the key - it's about the correct amount of time. No need to count seconds, or wait for two minutes after doing the procedure. I've gotten into the habit of doing this daily. I figure that will hold me over until I get the Sprintbooster installed

Does anybody know if this ECU reset trick will work on BMW cars, especially the SMG tranny models?

I know it works for Audis. Don't know about BMWs.

I was just tickled to see "highly recommand" come back to the active threads list!

How can you tell for sure if your ECU is re-set or not?
Any visual signs on the monitor like when u turn on the dyno mode?

Thanks

nope, but you should be able to tell the difference in terms of throttle response...

Tried the reset also. This is AWESOME for a "free" tune!!! Definately can tell a difference. The shifts are way better and a lot more squeeling of the tires. This will give me a reason to wear down these tires and get bigger wheels and tires... Thanks to whoever figured this out and posted it...

Um, me = stoopid, but doesnt depressing the gas without the car being on risk flooding the cylinders or something before start-up?

It's a perfectly valid question, but not to worry. The throttle is drive-by-wire, so there is no such problem. In fact, that's why the reset is needed!

Too bad it's the middle of winter here in Chicago with 6" of fresh snow today, otherwise I would try it. Bookmarking this thread and will try it after the Great Thaw (read: April).

C32 AMG - in Pewter
No point in resetting the CPU in the middle of Winter. The CPU reset does not have a permanent effect, it seems to reset transmission control map to a default one, that is sporty and feels great, but that does not last too long.

Transmission will adapt to driving habits. I imagine that in the Winter, it will not take too long until transmission goes back to a less "aggressive" mode.

One way around that may be to reset CPU and then switch to Winter mode when in traffic. That will likely not affect the CPU reset/setting for the Standard mode.

I wish there was a button to tell the transmission to stop "learning" or adapting and hold current map.
