break squeal!! what's the average life of our stock break pads?

For the last thousand miles, my breaks have been squealing a bit when I come to a stop. I've tried hard breaking a couple times but the squeal is still there. I'm wondering if it's time to replace the pads (no warning light yet) or if there's something I can do to make the squeal go away. The pad have approximately 30K miles on them.

Front were replaced at about 28k miles, very little left. The rears barely worn
at 37k.

1st i hope you're braking and not breaking.
2nd, take a look at pads see how much meat you have left. if decent then i'd try a fairly hard brake (not break) application from 70mph or so. see if that deglazes the pad.

pads can last 4 hrs or 4 years depending how you drive! my stock fronts lasted 4 yrs and 50k miles in street use.

Just changed fronts at 40K miles for the first time. Have to say, though, that about half of those miles are from highway driving. My tech told me I still had some left and even though had no squels decided to do it anyway to be on the safe side. 20-30K miles seems quite low but it might depend on how agressively you drive. Do you guys track your cars? I like to open up on the highway quite often but usualy make sure i have enough of the open space ahead of me. My brother, on the other hand, when driving my car is constantly on the brakes because he's trying to get in any whole in front of us without checking what's up front! After 5 mins of driving with him on the highway I usualy have nausea from constant acceleration and braking
