Surging Problem
For the last couple of weeks, ever so often when cruising at a steady speed, my car does a 1/2 second surge. The RPMs seem to rise and then recede,very quickly. This happens on cruise control or not. I thought I would do the old disconnect the battery for a while trick just to see if it would quit. After two hours I reconnect the battery, do all the resets, and get a
ESP Not Available malfunction message. What the f---? I would appreciate any ideas on what is going on!!

99 civic EK hatchback
your esp light is on because after diconnecting the battery you have to reset the steering angle sensor. all you gotta do is turn the steering wheel from stop to stop holding the wheel around 2 seconds at each stop. as far as the surging it could be anything from a software flash issue to a fuel pressure problem. if the car is under warranty take it in. if not throwing random parts at it may cost you more than having it properly diagnosed. hope i could help. good luck with your vehicle.
