Getting off the line

Hello to all the AMG owners out there.

I'm a new member on this forum, having recently bought a 2002 AMG C32 in silver, with 30,000 miles. It's standard trim, I've not got photos yet.

It's the 1st auto I've owned, I came from an Audi A4 1.8T Sport Quattro which was a manual with 180bhp (pics below), so this is a bit different !

This might (probably will) sound like a stupid question - what's the quickest way to get moving from standstill? With the quattro you would sit at 3000rpm and dump the clutch and there would be no wheelspin. But with the auto box, is it just a case of floor the accelerator when in drive (sports mode, 1st gear selected)?

What's the procedure?

Welcome to the forum and to AMG!
Seems everyone has their own "trick" for getting off the line the quickest, but for me I just slap it down to 1st, turn off ESP and quickly put the pedal down, but not just mashing the throttle. To me it seems to launch better by rolling into the throttle a bit and then just hold it pinned from there. With ESP on (and you may have already found this out) if you floor it and start to spin it will stop pulling and feel like you just slammed on your brakes!

Thanks SilverbulletAMG. Yeah the traction control coming on is like slammin the brakes on.
The weather here in Scotland has been crap since November, the roads are very greasy, with salt and grit getting put down almost every couple of nights. Hoping for better weather and dry roads soon to get the 350hp down in 1st gear.
Cheers
Alan

hello Alan good to see another uk c32 owner on the board

getting away cleanly is certainly a bit of an art and nigh on impossible on less than perfect roads, and esp can a pain but probably not a good idea to turn it off till the weather has improved.
I had mine turned off yesterday evening while on the way home, it had been a very sunny day so i expected the roads to be pretty dry, but when pulling away from a set of lights and trying to get past some slower traffic i hit a damp and greasy patch and next thing i know my back end started fishtailing so it was quickly turned back on again.

after a bit of practice you should get the hang of it ,as silverbullet said try to quickly increase pressure on the throttle till your under way then pin it to the floor,
also if your on the original wheels, when the time comes you could increase your tyre widths on the rear to 255/40/17 to give a slightly bigger contact patch or spend some cash and go for bigger wheels and tyres all round and have 265 on the rear, I'm running 255's but to be honest they haven't made much difference.

good luck with the car, i'm sure you'll love it

Thanks timberman. The car is standard at the moment, I don't have immediate plans to alter anything, I've always kept my cars standard. I never realised you could go up to 255 at the back.

Anyway, no traction worries for a few days, as it's back to work tomorrow in the 1.6 Alfa Romeo 156 . The C32 is too expensive as an everyday car for me.
Cheers
Alan
