i'd call tire rack and have them speak to the installer.
the 255's od is almost the same as the 225 front. the 245 is slightly smaller. never figured out if this was intentional by mercedes (pretty much endemic to all their staggered wheeled models).
to further fine tune the tire fitment discussion- the rim width range for a given tire size may vary per manufacturer. tire construction is the variable. if i remember correctly some dunlops (sp8000) can fit narrower than normal rims.

off topic but agree today's litigous society has me shaking my head. not so much the lawyers but the jurys all seem to be retarded or stoned. folks don't want to have personal responsibility for any aspect of their lives. spill hot coffee on yourself - sue the maker because it's hot. go to a drinking establishment, drink too much, get in an accident on the way home- hey let's sue the bar for allowing me to drink too much.

Your 255/40-17 is a closer match to the stock 225/45-17 in circumferance and diameter than the stock 245/40-17 rear tire. I have run this size Michelin Pilot Sport Cup on the rear wheels of my C32 on the track without any problem (except more understeer), and currently have the same size winter tires on the 17 inch C32 wheels on my C55. Just contact another installer, and tell Tire Rack about the problem. If you have good luck with installation and balance with the new installer, recommend them to Tire Rack. From personal experience they get some or most of their recommendations from people who recommend them to Tire Rack.
