On the Star service dvd (see attached image), it lists 4th gear as being closest to 1:1.
Jerry - maybe you are 'missing' hp and tq because of this - especially with the mods you have done?

It's near impossible to dyno on 4th gear. I've gone to my
dynojet three times. And each time I go there he still tries
to dyno it on 4th gear, but always fails and resort to 3rd gear.

hmmmmm...
I reviewed my dyno videos and there's no doubt that I'm in 4th for my pulls. Maybe it has something to do with how the power is ramped up?
Either way, if you dyno in 3rd gear at 1.49:1 and 4th gear is 1:1, you would likely end up with lower numbers that don't accurately estimate your car's true output.

he obviously does not know what he is doing...he has to ease into the throttle, otherwise it will down shift...he should also start the pull around 3800 rpms...this is also to prevent it from downshifting...

Isn't dyno more than just figuring out peak hp and tq Erick?
Measuring a car for power should consist any RPM from low
RPM to redline

not on our cars...because of the way that the transmission is programmed, it is impossible to measure the full rpm range...

i should know, i have tried everything with my own car and i personally get to dyno my own car at the shop that i go to...they let me do it because it is such a pain to get a good pull out of the car...

This is good to know...I will try it in 4th next time around.

Vadim - Should we be in 3rd or 4th? How do we know 3rd or 4th is 1:1?

OK, I talked to the Dyno shop and they said there would only be a 5whp difference, if that.

He also said that most dyno setups would not be able to keep up with a 145mph wind simulation and you would start to over heat and power would take a nose dive.

He said a 6 speed auto would be 4th and a 5 speed auto would be 3rd.

Anyone have any other info?

That doesn't sound right The only reason I say that is because the first time I got my car dyno'ed at the Atl AMG meet, the first pull was in 3rd (he didn't ease into the revs to get it to 4th) and I got ~20hp less than the 2 consecutive pulls (in 4th gear).

Possible, but how are the E55 guys and other 'beast' autos doing it?

On the same MB service DVD, I selected drivetrain info for the newer 6 speed C-classes - 1:1 is in 5th for the 6 speed (or at least that's how I'm reading it!).

I agree with your comments. I think that he is speaking from his experience with his dyno.

I will dyno the car in both 4th and 3rd gear tomorrow @ P&L and Friday @ GRD.

We'll see! Trust me, I want them to be wrong....it would be nice to find free HP!

I followed your instructions to the T
I tried waiting 0.5 seconds, 1.0 seconds, instantly, 2.0 seconds, etc, etc after turning the key to the #1 position.

Have any clues

Agree. That is what I have seen. 4th is just too much for most fans to cool down.

All of my testing was done in 3rd gear, so my dyno graphs show 3rd. I have tried 4th several time, but due to lack of cooling the numbers were usually the same or only slightly higher.

Here's a thought; since your car is an '04, perhaps this is the route you should be trying:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ight=dyno+mode

I was scolded on this thread for posting 1FASTC32's method, as a pre-2003 method. Let us know if it works for the 2004's.

post up the 04-up method in this thread, it would be good to have all of the info in one place so that it is easy to find...

As you wish:

Model year 2003+ W203 Dyno Mode procedure:

-The car has to be on the outside temperature display. Remove the key.

-Reinsert the key, turn it to position one. Very quickly, press the reset button 3 times.

-A screen displaying 12.0UBV (or something similar) will display. Use the up and down arrows to scroll through to "ESP Dynamometer Test Mode," and select "on."

-Car is in Dyno Mode and will remain there until you select "off."

Disclaimer---I have not tested this process so I make no claim to its accuracy. I stole this info from the previously referenced thread.

Woo Hoo!

Geez, I feel like a dork. I never bothered to look at the profile/side screen/name tag that said you had an '04 C32 until just today. Sorry I'm too slow to have remembered that there was a different Dyno Mode for the 2003+ cars. Also, after re-reading this entire thread, I noticed that the C55 method is the same for your '04.

By the way, send that bill to 1FASTC32, c/o Houston, TX. He started this whole fracas in the first place. Oh, and be sure to buy the most expensive tires you can find.

4th Gear Dyno Update

The car actually made less power in 4th than it did in 3rd.

Howsit guys!

Well after reading this forum and deciding to finally go and get a dyno of my stock car before mods are done and practicing this "dyno Mode" setting procedure (so i did not look like a tit!) i went today to get it dyno so i know where i am before the mods start.

Well i have had all my cars done over the years at this one shop here and know the guys pretty well... Anyway i mentioned to them about setting the car up in dyno mode first before doing the run, and the guy was like no, they have never had issues before just running it standard with the esp off. in fact he claims that running in dyno mode they have had cars making less power in that mode! So of course i told well u do it they way u know best ... before he even suck the car on the dyno he was quoting figurs of what i should be getting and what they have seen on C55's The E's etc...

Well good news of it all is that my car is a strong one thank god, was crapping myself and expecting the worst. He did the run in 3rd gear and acheived 305.6HP at 6000RPM ... i was expecting 280-290, so am really chuffed, their eyebrows raised and could see the look on their faces that this car is strong, and they are actually M3 specialists and admitted that this number is stronger than the M3's... Yehaa..

Well just thought i would share some more info. O yes the run was done at sea level and temp. was around 23 degrees celsius. about 73 ferenheit.

I hope for your sake they are E36 M3 specialists and not E46
M3, because the E46 has a mode where it allows the car
to rev over 6,500 or 7,000rpm when the front wheels are not
moving.
