Is there any way to improve the ride quality?
I'm giving my C55 to my fiance and I was wondering if I could change the shocks to improve the ride quality... It currently has the stock suspension pictured here:

Could it be as simple as just replacing the shocks or would the springs have to be changed as well?

The Bilstein setup is likely going to lower the car a tad bit, hence the spring change. It would also likely not give you a smoother ride if that's your ultimate goal. Bilstein's are a performance shock, which typically stiffen and/or lower the suspension.
Now, I doubt they'll be any stiffer than what comes on the C55 already, and I'm not sure you'd want to spend that kind of money for little or no change.
If your vehicle is a 2005, and assuming it has relatively low mileage, I cannot imagine you'd be needing shocks/struts at this point. However, if it's a softer more comfortable ride quality you're seeking, then I don't think this is the route you want to take.
