Need to diagnose leak

I have a 2002 C32 AMG with about 25K miles on it, and I noticed a small leak (drip on the floor and oil in the plastic shield below the engine). Checked for location of the leak, and I do see some oily substance around the cap directly in front of the oil filler cap. See diagram attached. Can someone tell me what this cap is for, and what fluid could be leaking from this location?

That the oil filter housing cap. When was the last time the oil was changed? If it wasnt done recently my guess is that the seal on the cap needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the input. I will check this out. Oil was changed 3K miles ago.
