Keep my old car as a beater, or sell it?
I recently picked up my C55 AMG. So now I own two cars (the other is a Chevy Cavalier).
I've been wondering what exactly to do with my 01 Cavalier. It has a few luxuries (S/C, Katzkin, big brakes, audio system) and only 77,000 miles. Paint's in whatever shape, but for the most part it still runs fairly well. The C55 is a whole different world to the cavy, and I drive it as much as I can because its so much fun. I've never been a "plastic on the sofa" guy either, so I don't want to keep the C55 garaged. The cavalier only costs me $125 per 6 mo. to insure, so those are the only real expenses on it.
1) Should I sell the cavy, and try to get some money for it? For the most part, the cavy will be sitting most of the time - my gf has her own car and I don't have anyone else besides me that would drive it. Selling the cavy for a few thousand would take a few thousand off the loan I owe on the C55.
2) Or should I keep the cavy as a beater? The C55 is somewhat flashy, so it's not the car to take at "certain" times. Also would have it in case the C55 breaks down (of course I hope this never happens). Then again, I'd have the cavy basically sitting there day after day as a depreciating asset. The C55 is fully insured, so if something were to happen, I'd claim it on the insurance.
Not sure if it's worth having the money, or having a beater. Opinions?

Haha well for now I don't want to mod the C55. The cavy was actually highly modded in the past (who mods a cavalier? exactly.)
So I really don't have the mod bug - the C55 is a great car bone stock. Only thing I guess I have to learn to live with is the stock HK stereo, because it'd be too much work to try to get an aftermarket sub in there for a little more punch.

From what you've wrote, there doesn’t appear to be any reason to keep the Cavalier. If you periodically went on long road trips and wanted to keep the miles of the AMG or had some consistent need for another car I would say keep it. Doesn’t look like you really have any need or use for it; plus taking a couple grand off that loan will be very nice.

Keep the Cavalier.
I also have have a second car to use as a beater and guess what? It's a Cavalier! I use it as a winter car and drive to places that I don't feel like taking my C55 to like a crowded movie theater parking lot, a night club/bar, Home Depot, when its raining outside etc. It also keeps the miles off my C55. I have about 280,000Km on the Cavalier and the only thing I've had to replace are the brakes. Its cheap and reliable and I can park it anywhere without really sweating anything might happen to it..

It never hurts to have a good reliable beater around for crappy weather days and places you wouldn't want to take the C55 (basically any store parking lot!!). Plus each time you get into the C55 after driving the cavalier,it will be like getting into a formula one car! Mix it up a little! It will give you a higher appreciation of the C55 for sure.

I would keep it. Just like wawy said, there will be times when you're going to want it so you can avoid the mess in the C55
I live in Center City and only have 1 garage spot and there are definitely times that I wish I had a second car--like when the dog has to go to the kennel or when I'm driving my wife's sister's kids around.

if the car isn't giving you any problems, i say keep it as a back up until you get closer to the 100k range and then sell it before you have to do any major maintence on it.

I think I'm going to go ahead and keep the cavy. There's just certain times when I don't want to take the AMG to certain places. I'll just continue to part out the car to try to get some money invested back, and keep it as my beater. Every car guy needs a beater anyway, right?
