The SMG wasn't really to my liking. It seemed somewhat lazy, but don't get me wrong its exhaust note and handling are indeed superb. I had not really to chance to really push the car, and maybe that's where the laziness seemed to be. I'm sure full tilt the car and SMG transmission are harmonious.

Notice how Mercedes depreciates so much faster than BMW's? I'm not complaining - I wouldn't be driving the C55 if it was at used M3 prices when I got it.
Indeed. You can get 2005 CL65s for under $50k nowadays.

At the 1992 (I think) FCA meet at Summit Point Raceway (W.V.), I was driving a black Daytona in the track event. We were hustling the car along, and were moving down the straight, accelerating in 5th -- over 150 mph. Then, there was something that sounded like an explosion in my left ear. It was Tommy Shelton in a 512S. Fast production cars are fast, but racing cars are in another league.

the Evo X is "more refined" then the VIII and IX's-but track-wise- the way Mitsu set up the rear end is unreal-you can throw the thing now stock and its great (def need powa mods on them tho-its def slower to get off the line, and from a roll)-
I'd honestly take the 3 over the X as a DD if I had too (40 miles one way half in traffic/half country road)-pics of my X just before it sold

I used to own a shop specializing in Mustangs, Vipers, and Qvale Mangustas. Do any of you remember the APEX Lethal 750 Viper in the Car & Driver Supertuner Challenge back in '01? That was the car we built. It actually made closer to 780hp. It was a normally-aspirated 9.0 liter V10. By far the most incredible, insane, and brutally fast car I've ever driven.

For the Qvale Mangustas, which most of you have probably never heard of before, we prototyped the Vortech supercharger kits on them. (The car used the Mustang's 4.6L DOHC motor.) We brought those up to about 400rwhp while retaining the warranty from Qvale. Alas, after spending $28 million on the car, they only made 284 of them before ceasing operations.

For Mustangs, we'd regularly tweak them up to an easy 500-700hp, especially the '03-era Cobras. Too bad they were so heavy--that really hurt the handling.

Many, many Mustang race cars as well at Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, Buttonwillow, etc.

Also driven countless Z06s (most recently an '08--mightily impressed!). I always say that one of my customers' '02 Z06 with a simple wheel/tire/brake pad change (even had paper air filters!) was one of the most impressive cars I've ever raced. Every action was fluid and easily controlled, and the car just took everything I could throw at it. Really a spectacular car.

Also have driven: 911, 911 GT2, Boxster S, 944 Turbo (particular car now has an LS2 in it!).

I know I'm forgetting a lot of other interesting/cool cars I've driven, but I savor all of them!

Bill

2005 C55 AMG
It's really great to see how folks with experience driving such a variety of performance and exotic cars have made the C55 or C32 their car of choice.

2016 Chevrolet SS, 2006 Cadillac STS-V
I've driven tons of Corvettes, a bunch of Z06 Corvettes (C5 and C6), but only riden in a ZR1 though. The best sounding one I've driven though was a Z06 with a Corsa exhaust.

Driven a bunch of 2010 Camaros of all kinds, installed the ground effects package on a few of them too.

I've also driven a few Cadillac XLRs, pretty cool car for what's basically a Corvette with a Northstar. Today I got to drive an XLR-V and the sound that thing makes is awesome (especially with the exhaust actuator disabled). Of course, there's that supercharger whine to go with it.

I've driven an S2000 and a Civic SI (not a jap fan, but that high revving engine is amazing). I've also driven one Infiniti sedan (can't remember if it was a G or M) that was surprisingly fast. Also some 350Zs and G35 coupes.

Just recently I got to drive an 07 SLK55, that was a fun little car but I still like my C55 better for the space. The SLK55 has a much better exhaust note than the C though. I got to ride in an SL500 a long time ago, that was one of the cars that really got me intersted in Mercedes. The other Benzes I've driven aren't really that interesting, a few C230s and C280s.

I'd really like to drive an M3 to see how it compares to my C55. For some reason I just really haven't had the opportunity to drive any BMWs. The only BMWs I've driven are a 97 318i and an 04 X3, not really that interesting.

SLK55 AMG, E320 BlueTec, ML350, (formerly) C32 AMG, MR2 Turbo, HD-FLH-FSE, BMW R100RS, Ducati M900
Carz

I got a couple of new ones to add from Germany...

Tesla RS electric roadster - 0-60mph in 3.8 sec, lotus elise handling, easily the quickest accelleration of any non-race car I have ever driven. I want one!!!

VW - Phaeton V10 twin turbo diesel. I did not drive this euro only version but rode in it on the autobahn with the owner. 330 hp, 500 ft lbs of torque, 185mph topend volkswagon, hooeee.

Fiat 124 spyder 1970 (old school roadster) nimble and as quick as an old 70's era 6.6L TransAm. Handles like a sportscar should with bias towards oversteer. 88ci (1438cc) DOHC engine with twin weber downdraft carbs made about 100hp and in this light weight that was plenty.
Porsche 944S (DOHC model) - most under rated car ever. Best overall balanced handling of any sportscar I have ever driven bar none.
Porsche 944 turbo just like the S only more of it.... and less. faster but lacked the wail of the twin cam 4v engine. Turbo lag was there but the power was still impressive. Able to hang with most modern cars even today.
Porsche 911 Carerra (old school model mid 80ish), nice torquey, to die for styling, but ultimately I was disappointed in the lack of refinement, lack of pure performance and the fact that it felt like a big torquey VW beetle.
Porsche 911e 1969 model. Fully restored. Sounded awesome, loved it but it was after all a 60's era car and this was painfully obvious.
Note: before the P-car owners slam me for "hating on" their icon, be sure, I LOVE all porsches and get weak in the knees every time I see one.

Toyota MR2 turbo - highly modded. This is one of the most capbale little cars from nippon ever. Able to run with Corvettes, Cobras, Z4's M3's and others on a race course and win. Unforgiving as hell to the timid driver lacking the confidence to commit to the corner. Hand built by Yamaha for Toyota.
C36 AMG - a slower but better all round car than some of the newer AMG's. Handling was superb as was the inline six DOHC engine.
C32 AMG - faster than the C36 but less refined in the handling dept. Beautiful car. Deceptively quick and easy to mod for more power.
350Z - sorta quick, pretty but boring. Slower than the MR2
G35 - Infinity, nice japanese car. Lots of bells and whistles. 2008 model had many of the things that MB was putting in their cars in 2002.
Lotus Elise - 195hp go kart. Fun, stiff, very focused for a street car. I want one.
Corvette - 1997 Stingray - restored and updated with big disc brakes, 502 big block crate motor making about 500 hp, Richmond 6 speed with overdrive, etc. Loud, fast, gorgeous, but 1960's suspension limited all round performance and made it a little scary to drive hard. Fun, but not one I would want to own.
Chevelle 1966 big block 396ci with updated holley carb, headers, 4 spd muncy trans, updated cam pumping out honest 400+ to the wheels. Fun, loud, hard to drive outside straight line runs.
Corvette early 70's era LT1 - fast, handled, felt great, loved it.
Bentley 1952 type R-R race car, right hand drive, pretty and very aerodynamic for such an old car. Slow but fun, fun, fun to drive.
1956 Dodge Royal something or other with Red Ram Hemi - torqey for heavy old car. I remember the pushbutton trans
1966 or 67 Plymouth 4door 426 street hemi - heavy, handled like crap, no traction, no brakes, and tons of power, lol.
Mustang Mach I (2004) DOHC motor - Awesome engine! I hate Mustangs but I loved that engine. Strightline performance was on par with my C36 and may even have been faster on topend. I was impressed by this one.
Mustang GT (2000) - sounds great, lots of wheel spinning torque, fun but way slower than the exhaust note advertises, lol. Why is it that so few manufacturers of V8's cannot make a car sound like the Stang or a flat crank Ferrari? I mean get real, the Corvette sounds like my moms old grocery grabber and even the C63 sounds docile compared to a Mustang GT...
Triumph Spitfire - I flew a Spitfire once... Not the fighter plane either, lol. Cool little old school roadster.
Honda S2000 - (AP1) what can a say 9k rpm redline, sweet little modern roadster with refinement and handling that rivaled the best. Not the fastest car but not slow either. In capable hands it is very fast on a road course. A car I would like to own.
Honda Prelude SH VTEC - Honda's early attempt to make a fwd car handle like a rwd car. It mostly works. High reving (8 grand) decent power. Tough as nails.
Honda Civic Si VTEC 5 spd - (my daughter's car), light quick for what it is, revs to the moon. No power below 6k but above that will run with a Mustang GT.
Ford LTD 4dr 429 superjet (early 70's) - not really exciting. Memorable yes, as each time you floored it, you would hear this giant sucking sound from under the hood and then the gas gauge reading would start to fall about as fast as the speedometer reading climbed

I am sure I left out a few of the interesting or less interesting cars.

Cars I would like to drive, own, test, or hear about (no particular order) are:

BMW M3 e92 V8 - I might consider buying one of these if it handles as well as it sounds.
BMW 335i turbo
Toyota Supra - turbo last Mk (another car I would like to own)
Ferrari 348, 355, 430
Ferrari Daytona V12
Testarossa
Audi RS4 V8 or S4 V8
C63 (I hated the styling at first but it is starting to grow on me)
SLK55 AMG (Love this car)
SL65 AMG turbo
Porsche 911 Carerra or turbo 1993 and newer versions
Porsche GT3
Porsche Caymen
Lotus Exige (I really like this one too)
Honda NSX
Mustang Cobra (2003-2004) terminator
Mustang Cobra Shelby 500
Saleen
Ford GT
Cobra Roadster superformance (install the 04 supercharged DOHC Cobra engine and you have an all around scare you to death widowmaker car, lol)
