Fuel Latch not releasing

Fuel Latch not releasing
A while back I went to fill up fuel and the latch didn't release.. no big drama just had to rip open the cover in the boot and reach around and pull the pin that locks it..
.. it's now starting to annoy me and the integrity of the boot lining has been compromised and doesn't sit right any more.
Anyone ever had this problem? The thing is straight after I fill up fuel and I lock/unlock the car the locking pin works fine.. it's only after some time it doesn't open up properly.
Thought I'd put the question out here before I take it to the mechanic if its a simple fix. Cheers!
