'02 C230 Coupe - P303 - Cylinder 3 misfire

Hello,

I have a 2002 C230K Coupe (2.3L engine, M111 engine). I have a P303 (cylinder 3 misfire) code.

It originally happened about 4 months ago, when I turned the car on from a cold start, and it was very rough. So, I turned it off and back on, and the problem disappeared, but the CEL remained on. So, figured that it would go away, because the problem appeared to go away, even after quite a bit of driving and on/off cycles (several weeks). Well, the CEL didn't go away. So, I disconnected the battery, waited 10 minutes, reconnected the battery, and I still received the CEL. So, I had the code read and it was a P303 (cylinder 3 misfire). Since the car has almost 95,00 miles, I figured I would change the spark plugs, as would need to soon anyway. I did that, and it still hasn't fixed the problem. So, I am planning to replace the coil-pack for that cylinder. Which is cylinder 3? Does it go 1-2-3-4, from the front of the car to the firewall?

Any other suggestions? The car seems to be running fine. Unfortunately, I need to get the emissions checked soon, so I do need to resolve the problem.

Thanks for any input.

-Pete

it runs 1,2,3,4 from the front to the back of the motor. If i were you i would swap the coil with another cylinder first to make sure its the coil before you replace it.

Viper, Thanks. I did post to the wrong forum. I just saw W203 and posted away.

j21, Thanks. That's a good idea. I will try that first. I hope that it's just a coil-pack, as those aren't too expensive (for 1). I just replaced the fuel filter today, because it was due. It's strange, because the car seems to be running well. It was just the one rough start, when the CEL first came on. It appears to be running fine since then (no rough idling, loss of power, etc.). Hmm...

Thanks again. I'll re-post to the correct W203 forum.

Yea it's not to push you away, it's just that there are many many more people who might know over there than over here that don't cruise thru this one.

As a M111K C230 Coupe owner, I might be able to help. FWIW, I used to have a high-rpm WOT-induced misfire, that would go away with an engine stop-start cycle. Replaced all 4 coilpacks and she was right-as-rain again... highly recommend you do all 4 - cheap insurance, and they're easy to change.

Good luck!
