Id do that in a heartbeat. Im growing increasingly bored with my current setup, and my single complaint about the car has always been no option for a manual trans. The hardware isnt the largest problem, it would be the ecu/tcu that would have to be figured out.

Nobody mentioned that having the most recent transmission from the slk would provide a blip on downshift which would be awesome

No, its the std. 7-speed. What quote?

I still don't get this. You can't just "add a gear." You'd have to add the programming, etc to be able to use the extra gears. It would be my guess you'd be looking at in excess of $10,000 for fab. The only option would be to retrofit, I suppose. And even that sounds like it could be $5-$10k min by the time you source parts, and have somebody put the whole thing together.

If your after lower RPM's on the highway, I'm not even so sure a 7-speed will give you that. I suppose it would in an IDEAL condition (ie 0% grade up/down, constant speed, constant traffic, etc). I've found the new 7-speeds are so close to a 6-speed that even the slightest throttle change induces kickdown to 5th or 6th.

Just get a different car

All in all, how about a 6-speed manual, now that would be a swap I would jump all over. If this car was a 6-speed manual it would be for me hands down the best small sedan of its time. I had an e46 m3 before and I only hesitated because I love stick shift and I needed a sedan, almost bought an older m5 but wanted a newer car and smaller size with a v-8
