Could malfunctions without cels result in unreadiness for emissions testing?

So I had autozone read codes and it was clean. He also could check the same sensors the emission test did, and they were all ready except for the evap system (yesterday only gas cap passed as intact), so I just need to drive it some more. Also today it said 0 malfunctions.
But...
I was hoping omeone could explain malfunctions to me better. How do you read them? Or get the code for em? What's the difference between malfunctions and CELS?
TIA

Ps. doea anyone know anything about mecedes emission readiness parameters? Are they based on miles, ignition cycling, tempurature cycling or perhaps others?

In order to read malfunctions I believe you need the STAR system. Codes can be pulled with an OBD scanner but the malfunction codes are a bit more unique.

I know every so often I'll get an ESP malfunction, but it then goes away. I swear sometimes I think these cars have a mind of their own.

Here is a simple explanation.
There are "current codes" and "stored codes". Stored code is like your ESP mulfunction that then goes away. But the code is still stored in memory for the mechanic to read later. And current codes are the ones that are still in effect. STAR system reads all of them. Most of the OBD scanners only read current codes. Things like ESP and BAS which have thier own indicator light dont result in a CEL (Check Engine Light).
And your car does have a mind of its own. It's called the ECU. Sometimes I wish that some of the newer members here (not you guys) had an ECU. Then maybe Jerry can be re-tune them.

Thankyou guys, I'm just trying to understand as much as possible. So would you say that most people never know what malfuncions they have unless they go to the dealer? Or have someone with STAR? Is there anyway for Joe Everymechanic to check em? I think my car is good for now but it would be handy in the future.

It really depends which ones you're getting. The car considers everything a malfunction. When your fuel or wiper fluid is low or you have a light bulb out it shows up as a malfunction. I constantly have the "teleaid SOS" malfunction. No big deal in that case.

When the car is on you can cycle through any current malfunctions that may be present with your steering wheel buttons. cycle through until you see malfunctions then use the up/down button to cycle through the specific malfunctions.

You can disable Teleaid with STAR and that error will be gone forever, I know because I hated it and finally did something about it.

I've been trying to get my indie to do it for a year. Every time I have it in, I mention it and he never does it. I think he's hesitant because he's never done it before.
