Surprising Civic Encounter

I was pretty surprised today. My roommate and I had a full tank of gas for the night and were heading out to a town about 30 minutes away to start the night at Hooters (classy, I know). A mid-late 90s Civic Si pulled up and he wanted to race. I told my roommate, "I don't even know why I waste the gas..." When I said that I heard him downshift and start pulling from my rear quarter. I stomped on it a little late and he kept pulling on me to about 2 car lengths ahead until we shutdown at 120 MPH! We went one more time where I started going a little early from his rear quarter and I took him, but he maintained within a couple car lengths behind! Once we stopped, we asked how much boost he was pushing and he said 12PSI. Anyway, it was a pretty square race. It definitely caught me off guard. Watch out for those little maxed out Civics!

Not too uncommon to have low 13 sec high 12 sec imports trolling around here.

It amazes me that a little 4 banger can produce so much power once you turbo them. The engine are also very reliable at that.

My roommate was one of tthe first to put a jdm rsx Type r (type s in the states) motorinto a second gen hatch (one of the lightest cars available. He runs 12 psi and makes over 500whp. Its the fastest car I've ever been in, scary fast. He has an NA stingray vette making similar power, not as fast as the civic

I have a ford focus hatchback w/ around 350whp... It's definitely faster than my c32 with a 181 & tune when on the highway. Off the line, the MBZ is way more fun, plus it's much classier.

Although not my style (since I'm an old guy from the 70's 80's).... I can still respect what kids do today with these imports..... and the boosted 4 cyl motors are crazy!

I'd build one, except you just don't see 40+ yr old guys running around in these little hatch-backs.... but I'd like to drive one in the cover of night

33 going on 34 and i have a 95 honda dx hatchback that i have had since 99. I have had a b18c1 with 75 shot and a b20vtec with a 75 shot both ran in the 12 range they were very reliable and did not cost that much to build and i love my little hatch and will never get rid of it. But the touque from the c55 is just what the doctor ordered.

You would be surprised how fast the civics are around here. A late 90's hatch sounds like a b20b turboed. A very common mod for them. They make right under 300hp. I barely beat my friends 95 hatch with a b20b turboed. He even has stock internals and is running 10psi..

12 psi on a high compression motor can make 400 in a already light civic.
You got off ez

Is the SIs differential and other components built to handle that much power? I know the Civics are infamous for being light on torque but still, 350 bhp seems like it would wear down the components of what is built to handle 197 bhp from the factory.

I remember when I had my heavy 6-speed Chrysler Crossfire Limited (215 bhp and 3300 lbs) I faced a 2008 or 2009 Civic Si from a light, it burned me. It was embarrassing to say the least. I don't know if that Civic was modded or not.

They can handle that much. Yeah stuff will wear down quicker. Some of them seem to have problems all the time. They are quick when they are running. A friend put his 300whp civic together for 5k including buying the car and it has done 160+mph already!! They almost never do good from a stop though unless they have good tires and a good differential..

The west coast and pnw has always had a strong import scene considering it originated down in cali so I'm always weary of getting stomped on by some civic hatch.

I got walked by a civic hatch with a giant FMIC. I shoulda known he was all business when I saw the semi slicks up front...I know I could have got him from a dig but the freeway pull he walked away from me and my friend's 335i...

Probably a low 12 second car considering how bad it pulled away from me.

I've been to import nites at Great Lakes Dragway and lemme tell you, some of these "imports" can flat out go. There's 9 second cars, BUT the large majority are NOT near street legal. Yes, the slicks on the front is a dead give-away, even worse of they have skinny's on the rear. BUT they handle like crap and are barely driveable due to torque steer. This is one of the fundamental limits of FWD cars!! Ever drive a Mazda Speed 3, the things like wrestling an alligator with the front end trying to go every which way but straight??
