Thanks for posting this, sorry about the catastrophic failure. My car has 33,800 miles and after reading this post I thought it's worth a check. There is definitely some play in the bearing and it sounds really dry. It still rolls fairly smooth, but for $20 and ten minutes, that's some pretty cheap insurance.

Same thing just happened to me. Before it happened I heard something that sounded like driver side tire shredding (I was in traffic right next to a concrete jersey wall so I could hear it fairly well, but it wasn't loud). The sound went away and I drove about 5 more miles then the Battery Alternator warning light came on and I gradually lost all power steering. Luckily I was only a half mile from home and it did not overheat at all, but I could definitely smell the broken belt. Car had 105k miles but belt was just replaced almost exactly one year ago, 14k miles since. Also just had car service B done last week. Hopefully dealer will cut me a break on repair cost.

'12 Mustang 5.0, '89 Supra Turbo, C55,
Is this a common issue with C55's? I have 57K, owned the car for two years, and have no knowledge of the cars history. She's been flawless so far. I read above its a $20 part and a ten minute job to replace. Is there a write-up? Which parts need to be replaced-idler pulley and which belt? To the OP, I'm glad all worked out well.

I'm not sure if it's a common problem or not. The service manager did say that he had another non-AMG that day with the same problem, but this dealership probably does a hundred Mercedes a day (MB of Arlington, VA). My car had 105k miles on it, no mods and not driven hard. BTW, dealer charged me over $400 to replace idler pulley and belt.

Tightener Pulley (part # 000-202-09-19) - $44.46
V-Belt (part # 014-997-71-92) - $73.50
Shop supplies (BS charge) - $41.38
Labor - $275.88

At least I got a free tow out of it
