Thread resurrection - re the eBay sellers for the proper 'gapless' grille, I believe there are two:
"accentre2005" and "expresspart"
The former is from Hong Kong, so make sure you spell 'centre' the proper, British way with the 're' and the end and not the other way around.
Anyways both sellers have the right ones I believe, with the top of the star even with the top of the grille, and a solid backing to the star. Wish it wasn't though, I wish the backing on the star was mesh as well, but I guess in this instance, one cannot have AND eat the proverbial cake.
