But do any of you guys feel bad when you are hard on your car?
I feel great until something fails as it always does on an bi-monthly basis...

Couldn't have explained that any better. That's exactly what goes through my head...

What exactly is the point in buying a performance model if you feel guilty and don't indulge in the extra power? If you want to tootle around like an old grandma, buy yourself a C350 and quit wasting the extra gas.

If there's open space, I'm going to open the taps. You're doing that engine disservice by NOT winding it out, I can promise you that. Obviously hammering the throttle from every stoplight would constitute abusive behavior, but I see nothing wrong with laying into the gas pedal once you're up and running.

That said, I'm perfectly content puttering around, and a lot of times I'm simply not in the mood to get on it or the traffic/time of day doesn't permit any kind of rapid acceleration. But if I have the urge, and the opportunity exists, I'm going to satisfy it and not feel bad.

So it looks like I've gotten mixed thoughts so far. Some feel a little guilty, and others don't.

Obviously I know its a performance model and meant for the abuse... Which I sure give it from time to time.

I feel bad when I leave the girl before she wakes up. But it's always worth the ride

I figure some guy in Germany built this motor by hand, I'm sure he'd be happy to know after 100k miles, the engine is still hauling up a winding mountain road.

I'm good to go! Just put on a new idler pulley and belt, time to give it hell. If I thought that an AMG Mercedes was fragile, I wouldn't own the thing. My last company car was sold when it had 187k miles and that poor thing saw WOT every day for years, never leaked a drop of anything, never had the head off, transmission apart, or any failure other than a battery, and it was a four cylinder Pontiac.

Every time I pedal mine with the wife along she says "ugh, I think we left my stomach in the back seat." It always makes me smile.

As people have pointed out, the power is there to be used.

I feel better if I get at least one hard launch every time I take the C out. One set of rear tires every 8,000 kms.

eclectic assortment of cars
I'm in the "drive it hard" camp. Most of the time I drive the car quite normally, no thrashing about - and that's just a function of traffic and the time of day that I drive. But if there's a clear piece of road, and I'm in the mood, then I'll hit it and have some fun - and I won't feel guilty about it either.

You got your chest all puffed out for the first and second paragraph of your post only to admit to driving like a "grandma" in the third. A true badass...

I agree with the thought that these cars are to be used for a particular purpose but don't agree that the purpose is to be abused.

I pretty sure no one here means abuse by the true definition of the word.

ie to
use wrongly or improperly, misuse, to treat in a harmful, injurious, or offensive way.

Driving your car fast, accelerating as fast as possible, braking hard and taking turns hard are not misuse, it was what the car was designed and built for hence AMG aw my god i'm totally going so fast.

Maybe with 185MM and supporting modifications putting out 100HP more at WOT it could be considered abuse. Either way still feel good as stated. Just sucks when a component decides to give out, and you ask yourself... "Would this have happened if I was easier on the car?"

I beat the hell outta my car every time I drive her. She gets treated well with fresh oil every 3k miles, and tires like a women changes shoes. It's what the car is built for...sure things break, but usually always worth it haha

GMC - Miata - Trek - P-Car
Frittered away ~$4000 over the last two years on repairs and consumables (e.g., tires and brakes).

I drive like a grandpa most of the time. Hell hath no fury like the gent running ahead during occasional track days though. ;)
These cars currently go for ~$8000. There’s no economic sense in preserving them for future generations. They're merely another expendable.

I feel the opposite. Like the car is meant to be pushed and if I drive like its a Prius that I am doing it an injustice.

C55 AMG T with Kleemann K2 and some stuff: 414 hp and 576Nm :-)
-The output of that big engine is pretty low which means itīs
not overstressed.
-Itīs handbuilt with precision.
-AMG has a racing heritage.
-Itīs built to race at Autobahn in speeds over 130 mph.

Change your oil often and use the best you can find and
youīll be fine!
Donīt be cheap on services!
