Headlamp Control Module?

Hey Folks,

So I went through a carwash yesterday and the car comes out... and the left lowbeam headlight isn't working.

I take it in to the dealer today and they call me saying that its the 'headlamp control module' which is a part they are quoting me at over $1000 to special order.

Has anybody heard of this before? WTH is a headlamp control module? Any idea how it could break / was it something from the carwash? Any idea how to get one for, say, less than $1000?

Thanks,
-Zach

Additional Details:

The part the dealer wants me to buy is 203 820 88 85, $1309.

Their tech swapped bulbs, didnt work. Swapped ignitors, that didn't work. Swapped the "Headlight control module" from the right side of the car into the left and then the left started working, and the right didn't. So, its definitely the 'headlight control module' whatever it is...

That said, ebay has entirely new lighting fixtures for the same price as this one part. Any thoughts?

The only thing that can be swapped from side to side is the ballast, ignitor, and bulb. So I'm pretty sure they are talking about is the ballast and the part number is just an revision of the old part . You should be able to find one on ebay, they go for $100-$250.

Here's a pic of the ballast:

Here's a thread that references that part number you mentioned.

Wow $1300 for a new ballast! talk about wanting to hose you. thats probably what a whole new freaking headlight costs. tell them to buzz off and go to another dealer.

PS - having multiple accounts i believe is a big no no

The dealer isn't trying to hose him, the list price of the part is indeed $900. A little labor for diagnosis and installation of the part and tax and there you go. However, there is one on eBay right now for $100. Better grab it quick. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-SL-...item5646fec169.
