Transmission Dipstick Tube question

Transmission Dipstick Tube question
I just changed the transmission fluid on my car and put back in exactly what I took out. It only drained about 4.5-5qts when removing the pan and filter. Does that seem about right?
I tried to measure the fluid level with a dipstick, oil dipstick from a couple of other cars and it goes in about 3ft and then stops. When I pull it out there is 0 fluid on it which leads me to believe it never hit the bottom.
Next I tried a thin wire stiff wire. The same result.
Is this OEM dipstick something really special? What am I missing?
If I accidentally have 1/2 qt too much in there do you think it is bad?

That does sound to be about the normal amount of fluid coming out. The OEM dipstick is like a spring and it very flexible. I would recommend getting the dipstick to make sure your level is correct, it's only $40 if I remember correctly.

That's right for a pan drop. When I did mine I flushed some through there as well. A couple weeks later I did a drain and fill again, hoping that some of what was in the torque converter mixed with the new stuff and I got a little more new stuff in there. Use the genuine tool.
