For anyone who has removed a C55 engine from their cars.
What's the best way to unbolt the transmission? I haven't started yet but my E55 has a LOT of room to unbolt the upper tranny bolts from the top but the C55 looks really tight between the engine and firewall...can these be gotten from the bottom?
Any ideas will be appreciated, don't want to start without knowing how to attack the situation first.

I haven't removed the engine on my C55, but I did it on my C43. The car's are similar in size.
I got at the engine to tranny bolts from both below and up top. The ones in the middle were the hardest, as the downpipes and primary cats block access to them. Not impossible, but definitely a large assortment of wobble extensions and universal joints and sockets is a must. Torx universal sockets can get expensive though, that kind of thing is usually only pro-level Snap-On stuff, not typical stuff to find in, say, Craftsman's range.
Also, I couldn't find a picture or link to one, but a rotating ratchet might be useful too, the type where instead of moving the ratchet backwards and forwards, you just twist the handle of the ratchet instead. Not good enough to break the bolt free, but useful to get it out the rest of the way.
I did it in my garage, which was a bit of a pain. A hoist makes it easier when underneath the car.

I've not had mine out, but I have done a rear main seal on an SL500. I ended up taking the airbox and elbows out and removed the top bellhousing bolts from the top and then took the rest out from the bottom when I removed the transmission.

No clue, but what if you drop the entire thing? Tilt the entire thing from the motor and tranny mounts?

Find a snap on dealer and get a E14 flex socket and a think mines a 2 foot 3/8" extension. You can get all the tranny bolts from underneath the car. I can have rear wheel drive 112, 113, 272, 273 engines out of these cars in 45 min on a lift but I do this for a living. Someone with good mechanical skill should have it out 2-3 hours.
