Honestly, I don't remember how hard it was since it was so long ago. I think you either have to remove the whole middle stack starting with the top vents OR you can just remove the shifter surround. Either way I'm able to get both off in a couple minutes. I do remember the plug connector for the 12v was a PITA to remove from the ashtray unit.
