Used car and Taxes.....
Hi. My friend is interested in buying a used C32 and would like to know if he has to pay sales tax for the car, if he buys it from a private seller, not a dealer. And if he does, does he pay the tax to the state he lives in or the state the car is from?
Thanks for you help..

Yep, that is the way it is in CA, probably everywhere.
A car is one of the few things I can think of where they get to repeatedly assess an 8% sales tax on the same item. Actually it stinks.

It depends where you live. Some states charge you sales tax if you drive it in on the road, even if it is only to leave the state. Your home state may or may not give you credit for sales tax paid. In South Carolina the most sales tax you have to pay on a car is $300. In some other states they have a reduced sales tax percentage for vehicles (i.e. sales tax is 8%, but for vehicles is "only" 4%). In GA you have to pay sales tax if you buy the car from a dealer but not if you purchase from a private party.
Best thing to do is check with both the state you are buying in and the state you live in.

Yes, your friend will have to pay the sales tax. One of my friend just deal with the private party yesterday and that's why I knew that you have to pay sales tax even you buy from private party.

In California you pay sales tax when you go to register the car. The amout of the tax is based on the price you paid for it. If you bought it from friend you might be able to get them to write you a bill of sale for less than what you actually paid so you can save some money on the tax.
