Stud Converison

Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone had done a stud conversion with the screw in type studs. I just ordered a set since CARID is giving me a hard time sending the correct bolts. I also figure this will make it easier when force to service the car at a non specialist. That way they don't put a long bolt in the back and destroy the e-brake.

Do you have factory wheels on the car?

Stock stuff has a ball seat on the studs. Most aftermarket wheels have a taper seat bolts. That seat is just as important as the length of the bolts. We've had cars come into the dealer after a wheel came off. The culprit was usually the wrong seat on the bolt (assuming bolts were tightened). That is evidenced by a tiny wear ring on the seat faces on the wheel. You get a ring of contact about 1/16" wide and it beats up the hardware.

Where will you get the proper ball or taper seat nuts?

I'm done with mercedes wheels in TX. Got 60 degree conical titan lug nuts in gun metal. I've cracked 4 stock wheels in 3 years living in Austin. Lived in Sacramento for 34 years and only cracked 1. Hoping these rotary forged wheels last longer. Got the nuts and kit at motorsports hardware.

Are you running different size spacers or something that you have different lug lengths?

When I was getting aftermarket wheels for my SL, I went through lots of templates and cutting trying to figure out if the ball seat was R12, R14, or R13. Ended up being R13 (three bags of bolts later) on the wheels I purchased.

Just get the proper bolts and call it a day.

Nice calipers, btw.

Thanks, There is a lot more leeway in the front and have never been supplied the correct length for the back. If to long they will hit the ebrake. My conversion kit is on its way. No more dealing with bolts for me I'm done.

The car looks fantastic! Details on the studs/nuts? I'm also tired of dealing with wheel bolts and would like to install studs.

I bought the kit below. Mainly because of the price. They shipped the kit fast and they were a pleasure to deal with.

I sold the c55 and got the ATS but it was just not what I expected. To compare that car to a c class or 3 series is laughable. It is an ok car but there is no excitement. I bought this clk55 a few months back.
The wheels are mandrus stiriling in 18x8.5 et32 up front and 18x9.5 et35 rear. So far I like them even though they are not very light at least the look good. I think I might do a 5mm spacer in the back too.

Just installed a set of the same studs/nuts on my C55. So nice being able to set the wheel on, torque the nuts, and not worry about wheel bolt lenght anymore!
