Mass air flow sensor all screwed up

Hi guys, I'm a relatively new Mercedes owner. I've owned a 2002 c230 kompressor coupe for about 2 years. Since then ive had to replace the control arms, and water pump. Sunroof grinds (hopefully fix that with a few washers, according to video) Paint is rusting. All seem common issues for early 2000's Mercedes. Other than the issues I love the car. Ever since I've had it, the check engine light has been on. Code says Mass air flow sensor. Mechanic says not to worry about it, he says it runs fine. Though just looking at it, it looks horrible like its melted, and was a horrible job from previous owner or something. I need some advice if I should replace this. Thank you

C43 AMG with a tune up
You drive a Mercedes, having a MAF looking bad is an insult to your vehicles performance which means you should replace this part.
Owning a Mercedes doesn't come cheap even if it's an old car.
Good luck

Wth is all that gunk and furry stuff on and around the MAF sensor and housing? An MAF doesn't have to look pretty for it to function correctly, but yours has either fallen apart on its own or been tampered with. I would guess the latter. You should post in the regular W203 forum, instead of the W203 AMG forum. You should also find a new mechanic and btw, if you've had the same code for 2 years, and given the shape the MAF is in, why do you need more confirmation as to whether or not you should replace it?

At about $160, I suppose a new MAF for your car may be quite a bit more expensive than for some other high volume mass produced car, but still not that expensive where it makes sense that you put it off for 2 years.

You seem angry. I dont know much about cars, thats why I take it to the mechanic. Him saying it runs fine not to worry, and how it looks is why im getting a second opinion here. I appreciate the link

Not angry... befuddled. This is the place for second opinions I suppose, if you're asking the right people in the right place (W203 forum). However, these things have been staring at you in the face for 2 years. An MAF code and a visibly torn up MAF should be pretty clear signs. Your mechanic is a moron. Good luck.
