What were the specs? I seem to remember it was 1987 and the car was a 300E that AMG tweaked to around 300hp. It was on the cover of C&D or R&T and it was painted black with tinted windows.

AMG has been around since the 60's, their first road car of note was a 6.9 litre sedan, they referred to it with some name but I don't think it was hammer,, the next car of note I believe was the original "hammer" which to my recollection was a late 70's 5.0litre sedan, and then the E class of the late eighties. Here is a link to some of the info.

AMG started around '67 with a 6.3L bored to 6.8 that was entered into the 24hr Spa event. The Hammer was a W124 sedan chassis (prototypes in late '85 with official launch in '86) fitted with either a 5.6L 32v or 6.0L 32v M117 (found in W126 chassis). Most people consider either of the 32v engines as "The Hammer," though some insist it had to be the 6.0 32v only. 5.6L 32v rated at 360hp and 6.0L at 375hp/407tq.
