5.5 V8

Dec 04' issue of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine has a good write-up about making of SLK55 and some background information about V8 AMG engine for the C55, CLK55.

" We were told in no uncertain terms that the V8 motors in the C43 AMG and CLK55 AMG were the real deal, and the supercharged V6 that replaced it in the C32 AMG and SLK32 AMG was a cop-out, " says Mario Spitzner, AMG's marketing director.

" So when we came to build the new generation of cars, we factored the 5.5 litre V8 into the equation from day one. "

Thus the decision to move back to the V8 power in the new C-class and SLK was not taken lightly.

I think you might strike a nerve there but I am curious if this magazine is available in the US. I have not seen it here yet. BMW magazines, yes, but none specific to MB.

I'm really confused with the future AMG lineup. Will they be running two parallel engine classes for the AMGs? One 3 Valve 5.5L V8 and another 4 valve 6.3L V8?

Or is there another 4 valve smaller unit coming out for the SLK55/C55?

Rgds,

It is available here in the States. I have been purchasing it at my local Barnes/Borders for the past few years.

The article in this issue did not mention new V8 engines.

On item worth mentioning about the SLK55's 7G Tranny :-

" The other expensive exercise was modifying the 7-G-Tronic gearbox to take the greater power and torque of the AMG V8 motor. The gearbox only went into production in September 2003, so it was not ready in time for the C55 AMG. The SLK55 is the first AMG vehicle to adopt this new gearbox "

What that implies, the 2006/7 new generation of C-calss AMG will almost likely to have the 7G-tronic.

I'm not convicned yet that the 7 spd transmission is a good thing. Reviews of the new SLK55 AMG's 7g tranny haven't been great.

Maybe but I think the C55 needs a 6th gear. Pretty close to 3K RPM (if I remember correctly) at 80 mph is not great for gas mileage.

Agree with you here. It does need a 6th speed.
