MB Key Shank
sorry for the newbie question, but what is the purpose of the metal key shank (sits in the body of the key) other than being a key ring holder.
mine fell out and I asked the dealer to replace it when the car was in for warranty work. dealer quoted me "about $10" and when I picked the car up, I was charged $28. did I get hosed?

if it's similar to the C55's, if you press down the jagged button lever and pull the metal part out, it should be in key mold, I believe that's for valet service or if your alarm knob ran out of batteries, you could still unlock your car from the door handle...

...and to lock/unlock the glove compartment and the back trunk, so I think it's a good idea you bought a new one, even though they charged you more than they quoted you.

The idea behind the key is two fold.
(1) To be able to open the glove box, trunk and front driver's side door if power fails in the car or the electronics malfunction.
(2) To be able to manually lock the glove box and trunk so that a valet cannot open these compartments while they have your car and you are in the restaurant, casino, club, etc.
A lot of people carry valuables and don't want some guy making $2 per hour plus tips getting any ideas. Personally, I don't carry valuables in my car very often, so I never use it. It is nice to know that I can though.

$28.00 is normal price for that Key Shank. The quoted cost of $10.00 seems to be a little low, even below dealer cost. Since you can only get the key from MB, which they are all ordered out of Texas, if your in the US. The shank should not fall out, if the colored button was inserted wrong that could be the route of the problem. If you got further questions, let me know.
