Was the C36 the 1st AMG to be produced and sent to the good ole USA? I have been browsing for one, and that was brought up and I thought there were others sent over.

The C36 was the first factory AMG. It was the first model sold by Mercedes dealers, with a full Mercedes warranty. Prior models were just tuned standard models.

Thats what I thought, that has me thinking harder just on the heritage factor.

I believe that the first AMG to be sold in the US was the Hammer, which was based off of the E190 sometime in the mid 80s. Check the new AMG website, I'm sure there is some information about it there.

The Hammer is based on the 300E W124 chassis. It was a car tuned by AMG. Back them AMG was NOT owned by the factory so it is not an AMG in the sense of anything we have right now.

That Hammer is more like a car built by RENNtech. Funny too because the Hammer was designed by Hartmut the founder and CEO of RENNtech.

The C36 is the first AMG to be made under AMG after MB bought a controling interest in the company and made it MB's personal in house performance tuner.

Depends if you are asking about the first AMG sold though Mercedes in the USA or the world. If the world, that would be the 1992 190E 3.2l, which was a model built by AMG (body shells shipped to AMG) and were sold through Mercedes dealers (Europe only).

As for the USA, the 1995 C36 was the first to be sold through Mercedes Benz dealers.

What about the 2.3-16? Or are we being technically correct here?

the 2.3-16 was engineered by Cosworth. Not AMG.

WTF? They don't list the 5.4L engine -- the staple of AMG cars since the E55 on 'til recently -- in the engine timeline history.

In case that's too subtle for you, not get'n yer drift; yer meaning must be too subtle for me ... 'cus I -know- you're not rank'n on the 5.4L AMG engine... couldn't imagine anyone to be retarded enough to be doing that but still able to type on a keyboard and work a computer.

Right back at'chya , with far fewer "******" strings in my text to you; none actually. i.e. your PM was littered with ******; I can surmise your intent but the effect was lost and I didn't find much of anything insulting -- haha. There is also a clue in my private PM response, but it may fall on deaf ears.

<note : re-publishing my original response. much deleted after receiving PM response>

So why don't you just stop with always having to interject something negative either directly or indirectly about "touching/modding" our cars, as probably 99% of the people here -do- mod their cars! I was responding in general to the public community, throwing something out there for everyone to consume and ponder. Sorry you think I was talking -to- you just because I posted it -after- you. I at least certainly had nothing negative to point in your direction because you don't agree with me on the topic of 'modding' our cars; I appreciated the material posted and continued the conversation. And with that, whether -I- had chosen to put a 5.4L engine in my car or not, I would have -still- made that exact comment about the omission in that exact same manner. Because yes, it's ridiculous that the AMG site doesn't note and elaborate on the engine that -really- put them on the map in the social consciousness, since AMG was folded into MB Corporate. ...and let's realize I got hit in the head for it [i.e. your use of ] -only- because I chose to put one of them in my car, and you're almost a religious zelot against anyone that does anything to their car.

...get it Vardar?!

I guess it comes down to ownership timeline, but I believe it was the 300SEL 6.3 that many consider the first. Then the 6.9.

I would say that the C36 is the LAST real hand made AMG car. They started to build C43's from ground up in Affalterbach for the first time in late '97 or '98. So in a sens the C36 will allways have this unique value compared to all others that came just after such as the C43, but as a difference with actual AMG's, the C43 still does not have the signature of the guy that assembled the engine as it is for all AMG cars now. Anyway, the C36 will stay at the top of the most famous AMG cars ever produced as it is for the E190 Evo II... at least for me

The local foreign car shop owner test drove my car before I bought it. He specifically told me that C43 engines are hand made, and they do have a that particular mechanic's signature either at the bottom of the engine or somewhere on the engine".

No offense to anyone, but this is what I heard from a 73 YO mechanic that has been running the same shop for about 50 years........

The C43 only had the intake, exhaust, and cams replaced and the ECU retuned to make an extra 30hp or so. The C36 was stripped to the block and replaced by all AMG componets to include bore & stroked, pistons, rods, cams, crankshaft, intake, exhuast, and retuned ECU to make 80hp more. Both are excellent cars. From a heritage point, the C36 is more true AMG where the car is built from the ground up. The C43 has a couple of minor mods a shadetree mechanic could do. But that is just my opinion.

I agree. I looked over every inch of my 4.3L engine and 5.4L engine and couldn't find a signature.
edit: when they were out of the car.
