Hydraulics bump while cruising?

Hydraulics bump while cruising?
Hello all, a newbie here but hope to stay for a while! My 98 C43 after starting up after a few seconds will "pump" and pop the brake (quick flash of the 3rd brake light in mirror). This in itself never scared me but while driving on the return trip from work of about 45 miles one way and cruising along at 70 mph it will scare the daylights out of me as it happens again. 
This last time it was not so gentle nor a quick fraction of a second but longer. Any clues to the cause?
Happy to drop that $$$$ on the MAF sir may I have another??
