Max, it's generally very simple and done while performing an oil change so the pan is empty
Last time I checked, the cost (W210 car) was ~$60 and the lil' sucker is held in with two bolts...no big deal. It's mounted on the outside of the oil pan.

no, on the m113 engine the oil level sensor is mounted inside of the lower oil pan(sub pan), you have to removed the lower oil pan, and removed two torx then replaced the oil level sensor, just make sure the o ring is sitting properly when you install the new one. O, and clean up the sub oil pan and reseal it with m.b approve silicon.
