SLS AMG- anyone else horrified?
http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car...hotos_and_info
I can't put into words all the things that I find wrong about this car...
It's a 225k 8 year late entry into the misguided BS retro fad that was created by failing american companies using their last gasps to perpetrated a few more sales onto hapless rednecks... and it's made by "AMG". WTF!
Let's talk about icons- the fastback mustang, '69 camaro, anything ever dreamed up by mopar all pale in comparison to the 300sl. I feel like MB has ripped my heart out (and it's more of a *******ization of the original than the "retro" *******ization of those).
In some ways this confirms why I cherish my '99 (with it's screw you we're keeping it simple styling and performance). I can't wait until enough years pass that NO ONE mistakes my owning my car for not being able to afford a newer one... (remember that discussion a while back with that fellow with the s430 or whatever- why mod such a crappy car as a C43, no one will mistake it for anything new! THANK GOD).
I'll stop there, but could go on and on and on...

I hope they are still working on it!!! That thing is just plain UGLY. They have to make some radical changes to that hunk of metal. Then again they will prob. be all sold by the time its released.

I disagree completely. I think it is a great car. Besides the gullwing doors and some minor design details, I don't see it at all as being an attempt to remake the 300SL in the same way that the pony cars have done. Its more of reestablishing brand identity.

AMG C43, 1999
I do think it looks better than the SLR, which is a car I could never come to terms with the way it looked.
However I do agree with the statements regarding our C43 and C36. I get more people looking at my car than seem to look at the newer Mercedes. Couldn't tell you why but it happens enough that I am aware of it.
I really like the two tone seats although I wish the front seat had a little better lateral support.

the gull wing doors just kill the car for me... looks like...um, well for lack of a better word.. crap, To each his own, but I get more questions about my C43 than most other mercedes at local gatherings. sweet and simple. My car will fly, but it dont need wings

don't get me wrong- I'm not trying to say I like our cars that much, more so that it's a good fit for me. one of these things would definitely get a lot more attention.
I DO feel like it's an attempt to remake the classic along the lines of the pony cars- at least all the major magazines that have reviewed it seemed to think so as well.

You should take a peek at the production model before passing judgment (http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...g-second_drive). The test unit was not exactly... um... refined? I had the same reaction when those photos went up, but the production body is a lot less post-apocalyptic.
It's not a pony car style remake in any case. It's a competent design and I think they'll go some distance with it. However.
I don't get the trend at MB to make their high end interiors look cheap, gimmicky and dated. I would have pushed for an interior that referenced and updated the W198 in more than just the two token gauges: leather, chrome and glass; minimalistic and analog. The interior of the SLS looks more like a Jeep Liberty than a Gullwing.
