The guide rails on the rear bumper are on the side not in the rear, the rear is held up by 4 bolts that go into holes in the rear. Taking off either bumper is EASY and resetting the guide rails is easy too.
what is involved exactly in "resetting the guide rails"? is there some spec that we are to follow, or is it a trial and error process?

There are some specs per the WIS but if you move the guide rails as far up as they will go your bumper is as flush as it gets, it is really easy

i finally got around to realigning my rear bumper, or at least the rearmost portion of my rear bumper. looks so much better. it's not flush (and i've been told that it's actually not supposed to be flush), but the gap is now even all the way around. before, the gap on the back part of the bumper was twice as wide as at the rails (no exaggeration). i didn't reset the rails bc i was too lazy, but if i did, im sure the gap wouldve come down even more. but it looks good (enough) as is now. thanks for the tips!

(W)erkstatten(I)nfo(S)ystem or something like that. It is an electronic information system used by the dealerships, it shows how to remove/install EVERYTHING on MB cars.

You can buy it on Ebay among other places, it is very helpful if you are working on your own car.

503 thanks for that now i know what it is cheers, im just going through the sagging bumper saga at the moment. Today i took the bumper off and both of the brackets on the side are cracked so i will order a new bumper support tomorrow. With the guide rails that are on the car you can unbolt them and adjust them to close the gap right?

That's what I did, unbolt the guide rails and slide them as high as they will go and bolt them back up. the damaged bumper support is the culprit though, once you change it you will see.

Same thing, loosen the 2 screws, slide it up, and tighten the screws.
