must a shop HAVE the STAR diagnostic tool?
is this a must to get work done on our cars? can we get away with it otherwise?

You can perfectly get away without a Star, as our cars are not heavily loaded with electronic modules. However, a simple OBD scan tool can be useful to track fault codes. You need to be able to understand them also In certain instances, you need Star to erase some codes.
