New Brakes

I figured I've got about as many track days as I dare on my last set of rotors so I figured I'd take a few pics to share. I wasn't worried about the cracking, it's about right considering the rotors were getting thin. Changed the trans oil too, nice when it comes out this clean

I replaced the caliper slide bushes, forget AMG, BMW used the same slides on a 7 series.....half the price for the same part! I also added titianium shims from hardbrakes.com They are 0.5mm thick and stop heat coming through from the pads into the caliper. Our pads are the same as a R32 Golf so easy to get "off the shelf" shims. Not sure how effective they'll be but they certainly cant hurt.

Here are some more pics, including pics of my $10 brake cooling "package". consisting of a few cable ties and 2 pieces of ducting. Not sure how much it helps but it certainly doesn't hurt.

G'Day Mate,

Very very interesting information concerning brake upgrades for our 43's Amazing to see the cross use of certain parts among other manufactures and the difference in prices

The brake cooling ducts from under the front apron could be prone to crushing IMO specially if the vehicle is low. I was thinking of also doing some brake cooling too but I would get an air duct in the air flow through the lower grill next to the fog lights. Then I would cut a hole in the wheel lining and get the piping directed to the callipers and rotors. I have to get a front wheel off to check the idea...

I had a track day yesterday but unfortunately it was raining so I left my road tyres on instead of the semi's so I didn't get the brakes anywhere near hot enough to see any benefit from the shims but the pedal was firmer which I think is a combination of the slides and the having the pistons as far back into the caliper as possible with new pads and disks.

I know the brake ducts hit the ground, I only put it on for track days. It was just a experiment to see if it dropped the temps down at all. The biggest gain I've had was changing from 17" monoblocks to 17" double spokes from a C32 with dropped rotor temps 100C/212F or the other wheel I tried was 18" monoblocks with dropped about 75C/167F. Shows how tight the 17" monoblocks are around such a big rotor!

I imagine the Monos do not privilege heat dissipation... Some more opened wheels can certainly help I will get the titanium shims to try out as the alpine passes are all opening in the next days and they are my favourite driving roads My brakes just get cooked from time to time specially going downhill, so any ways of cooling them should not be ignored
